Intentional YouTube_
Friday 30 January 2026
For years I have warned against the evil that is social media. I also argued that YouTube is not the enemy. There is a lot on YouTube that I genuinely want to watch. Videos that I learn from, ideas that stay with me and have shaped me.
The problem is that for every excellent video that I watch, there's a bunch that are merely good. And after those, the hours quitely disappear and I realize I've watched a bunch of videos that meant nothing to me. The next day I open YouTube because I crave those excellent videos. Sometimes I know a video is not going to be excellent before I click on it. I just want to watch something good, because I'm bored.
I don't want that habit anymore. I want to get rid of it. But I don't want to say goodbye to the excellent videos. I want to be more intentional. If I choose to watch something, I want it to be a choice I make consciously, not one made out of boredom.
So, here's my plan: I'm allowed to browse YouTube in search for those excellent videos. I can chose 3, which I will watch in the evening. Not during the day. If it turns out that 5 is a more comfortable number, fine. If I watch one during lunch and the others in the evening, fine. This is about intentionallity, these rules should help it. Under no circumstance should I be frustrated with them such that I fall back to old (current) habits.
